More Pictures of My Living Room than you ever wanted to see

So we bought a camera. A nice one.

It’s something that Aaron has wanted for – I don’t know – the last 10 years. After months of planning we pulled the trigger and the camera arrived yesterday afternoon. I always feel silly after a purchase like this because I fight it and fight it and fight it and (we already HAVE a camera! Sure it doesn’t hold a charge anymore….sure the lens is constantly cloudy…sure it’s 8 years old…) and then after we decide to actually get it? Guess who hogs it all day long? haha. me. It feels like every time I hand the camera back to Aaron I’m saying something like, “MAN I LOVE THIS THING.” I think he’s maybe taken 10 pictures and I’ve taken five hundred. heh.

In honor of our one year house-aversary, and because I’m having too much fun with this camera, (and because Robin asked to see more pictures) Here’s some pictures of the living room before we bought it:

and here is a “during” shot with our old sectional that didn’t fit right:

and here we are today:

AAAAND. I couldn’t do this post without sharing a few more. These will tell you more about what our living room actually feels like at any given moment. (more of these coming ;)

FYI.

here are the items we got on KSL (craigslist):

navy loveseat (remember? perviously nasty green slash light oak?), large floral ottoman (used to be a coffee table),

yellow chairs.

The reading chair in the corner I got at a thrift store and recovered it. (and did a horrible job. seriously. there’s a pillow on it for a reason.)

The brown side chairs underneath the pictures are from Urban Outfitters.

Floor lamps are from Target. clearance. (SCREAMING GOOD DEAL)

The armoire used to be pine – I painted it a high gloss oil-based navy. ivory acrylic-based on the inside. It’s our games closet.

The curtains are basic grommet ones from Ikea – I painted the large plum chevron stripes using this tutorial: http://kfddesigns.blogspot.com/2010/10/chevron-curtain-diy.html

leather poufs: ebay.

bookshelves: ikea.

books on shelves: Orem Public Library. ha.

grey couch: Ikea.

lights on mantle: basement Christmas storage bin. ;)

rug: west elm

the tv is tucked away in the wood armoire next to the fireplace. It’s actually attached to the wall with an adjustable arm so we can be sitting anywhere in the room and still see just fine.

Wow. I feel so official. Like I’m actual sharing an official house tour to the world! (and not just my readership of tens…or ones. ;) At any rate – thanks for visiting.)

look at this! Two posts in one week! Hopefully the new camera will spur a posting spree!?

p.s. I’m really sorry about this new wordpress format, until I (Aaron) iron(s) out all the kinks, in order to comment, if you’re on the home page, you’ll have to click the “read more” button at the bottom right hand side of the post. Unless I sent you a link to the direct page. Then you should be fine.

  1. It looks awesome! I love all the good deals you got, too! I really like the book shelves — that is a great idea!

  2. I think everything looks awesome! I didn’t notice the bookshelves on the wall. What a great idea to encourage reading! It’s your own little reading nook! I also really like that fabric collagey picture next to the armoire. Story? Amazing how the room is so homey now! And it really seats a lot of people too! Not to mention the cute factor.

And please DON’T show David the camera. He’ll have severe camera envy until we get a good one. :-)

    • Amy, thanks! I’ll tell you the story of the fabric collage thing when I see you in person. what camera? ;)

  3. Yeah, I’ve been waiting to see more pictures. I have to live vicariously through you since I can’t do any decorating. I’ve got plenty of ideas pinned on pinterest though :-) . I LOVE the room. You’ve done an amazing job and how cool that you got so much for so little! Two things in particular I love: the ottoman and the bookshelves. Was that really a coffee table? You have to tell me how you did that. And the shelves are so great! I would love a reading nook with shelves like that. What parts of the house haven’t you done yet? Is the basement still a work in progresss? I think the chalkboard stuff is so cool.

    • Thanks Jeanne! We unscrewed the top off the coffee table, had a piece of wood cut to fit the top (from a friend), put foam and batting on top, then fabric, stapled it to the bottom, glued on some piping, and painted the base. (search on interest for “coffee table to ottoman” – or you can go find it on my diy board)

  4. Looks awesome!! I think my all time favorite are the pictures of the boys over the mantle and Luke is sticking out his tongue :o ) Thanks for the pics!

  5. Thank you! You can NEVER put up too many pictures. I love your taste. It’s inspiring to see how you’ve been able to combine so many different styles and pieces and make them all come together. Good job! A+

The reading nook is delightful. I also like the bookcase that’s off in the background – of your office. You can tell this is a family that encourages reading.

  6. Katie, your decor is SO cool, that now when we see awesome fabric or furniture we say it’s “katie Miller fabric”. That is how fabulous you are.

  7. I love before and afters!!

I think my favorite thing is the wreath at the fireplace – I love it!
